I've loaded an APE file via "Open Files"- unfortunatelly it was not only loaded but also played altogether.

If you only open WMP and have not played a file, then no file is locked (unless it is an updated file and WMP scans it to update the library). The locking mechanisms of the file system have nothing to do with "read only".
